Today is International Women's Day and it's also our SECOND BIRTHDAY!!! I'm sure this doesn't sound like a big deal to be celebrating but BELIEVE me this is nothing short of a miracle. This time last year, I had already started to feel the pinch of what would eventually snowball into the COVID-19 global pandemic. By end of March, we were in a lockdown and I had no idea if/when I would get my new orders replenished from my suppliers. I was frightened. Then on April 8, I received a letter from another woman-owned beauty company threatening to sue me for the use of the word BOSSY. I have been fighting this other brand since then and you'll have to wait for me to share the whole story because it's not only EPIC but it will clearly explain why I AM SOOOOO HAPPY THAT WE ARE STILL IN BUSINESS TODAY!
According to Forbes, nearly 50% of Black-owned businesses shuttered as a result of the pandemic! Insane, scary, and really sad. According to Fortune, the overwhelming majority of job losses due to the pandemic were women and, to be specific, women of color. Needless to say, ALL of us who are not billionaires have suffered SIGNIFICANT losses over the last 12 months.
It's because of this, that I am choosing to celebrate this small yet MIGHTY achievement with every bone in my body because I know what we have all been through. I hope you have at least one thing - no matter how small - that you can cling to and see as something to celebrate in spite of the times that we are in.
